Black Onyx is the most common variety, along with white and red colors. Black onyx is known as the ultimate protector against toxic energy as it absorbs the impact of negative energy. It cleanses, purifies, and transforms noxious energy into a lighter vibration. It clears negative thoughts and ingrained emotional pattering and promotes a positive attitude to life. It balances male-female energy within the body and has a strong connection to devic energies in the planet. The red variety is known as Sardonyx. The ancient Romans entered battle carrying amulets of Sardonyx engraved with Mars, the god of war. This was believed to bestow courage in battle. In Renaissance Europe, wearing Sardonyx was believed to bestow eloquence. Sardonyx was traditionally used by English midwives to ease childbirth by laying it between the breasts of the mother.
