The Scallop Shell is a symbol of good luck and is believed to relieve stress by offering a protective shield. Due to their association with the sea, which connects distant places and people, the scallop shell is believed to enhance travel luck and strengthen long distance relationships by connecting those who are apart.
The scallop shell is also the symbol most closely associated with the Camino de Santiago in Spain which honors the Apostle St. James. Legend has it that during the celebration of a wedding, the groom mounted a horse and threw himself into the sea to show his love to his wife. Overwhelmed by a strong wave, however, everyone thought that he would not survive.
On the contrary, he managed to emerge together with his horse, covered with scallop shells that had protected him. A few days after this event, the remains of the Apostle Saint James, would arrive by sea to the Galician coast.
As a symbol of faith and gratefulness for this miracle, the man made a pilgrimage to Santiago with a scallop shell.
