The Into the Deep Necklace features genuine aquamarine connected on either side of a gold circle. This necklace was designed and inspired by my love for the ocean and my fascination with the deep sea. As a young girl, I attended a lecture with guest speaker Robert Ballard, the oceanographer who found the Titanic. In his lecture, he explained that more than 80% of the ocean remains unexplored. He argued that instead of are spending billions of dollars sending people up into space, we ought to learn more about our own earth and our oceanic ecosystems. My hope is that this necklace will inspire a love and respect for ourselves, our earth, and the oceanic ecosystems that keep our earth alive and well.
Aquamarine is named from the Latin aqua marinus, which means "water of the sea". This term refers to its various blue-turquoise, ocean-like color. The pale blue, transparent crystal is a member of the Beryl family. Its color is the result of iron oxides within the chemical makeup of the stone which can give it a greenish hue. In ancient myth, Aquamarine was considered to be the treasure of mermaids. It was used by sailors as a talisman of good luck, fearlessness and protection. It was also considered a stone of eternal youth and happiness. Today it protects all who travel by, over, or near water. Aquamarine embodies all things connected to the sea. Being that the sea serves as a mirror, reflecting the heavens, this stone embodies the symmetry, balance and relationship between the two. Due to its nature as a stone of symmetries, it is important for meditation and revelation. Therefore, aquamarine has been used throughout history by prophets, shamans, healers, and mystics.
